Sports-related head injuries are serious business:
- They are the leading cause of death from sports-related injuries
- Every year, at least one high school or college football player has died from a head injury
- Tom Cutinella (Shoreham-Wading River High School) was one of three recent high school football deaths from head injury
- Contribute 21 percent of all traumatic brain injuries among American children and adolescents
- All sports contribute to this as highlighted in a recent article in the New York Times
The high profile efforts of the National Football League are a start at bringing much needed attention to this problem and the need for good policies has begun to filter down to the college and high school levels. Organized neurosurgery has long championed the need for attention to this problem. Highlighted in a recent Neurosurgery Report are articles on sports concussions. We are proud of the landmark work included in this important publication.
